Self-Care and Healthy Food: Choice Equals Power
Our relationship with food is one of the most intimate relationships we have, and yet so often we don't give our food choices a lot of thought. As women, we are so accustomed to taking care of everyone else in our lives that it can be a stretch to take the time and make the effort to care for ourselves, and make choices that support our health. It can certainly be a challenge these days with all the marketing hype by the food corporations who are just trying to get us to spend our dollars on their products. And processed and packaged foods are so easy and convenient for our busy lives.

As women, we are so accustomed to taking care of everyone else in our lives that it can be a stretch to take the time and make the effort to care for ourselves, and make choices that support our health.

We've all heard the oxygen mask reference, right? When the airplane is going down, put your own oxygen mask on before you help anyone else with theirs. We need to really take this to heart, and apply this principal of self-care and healthy food choices to our daily lives. If we aren't loving ourselves enough to take the time to care for ourselves, then how can we expect to have the energy to care for others? If we aren't giving the gift of attention to ourselves, then how can we ever hope to understand and listen to our own body's messages that let us know what we really need to be healthy and balanced?

Instead of pushing through your hunger because you're too busy to eat, or eating when you feel tense or stressed out, reaching for the sugary and salty foods you're craving, slow down and take a moment to check in with yourself. What are you really craving? Take a few deep breaths and see if you can use your intuition and body awareness to make a better choice.

Its really quite simple. You can dramatically improve your health by eating lots of fresh whole foods, drinking pure clean water, and getting plenty of exercise. You also need to find ways to relax, get sufficient restful sleep, and find ways to have fun and enjoy your life. There really is no magic pill, but there is the magic of personal power that you can practice everyday when you choose how to feed and care for yourself.

We all have the power of choice. We can choose to take care of ourselves, or be so busy taking care of everyone else that we neglect our own needs. And we can choose to eat a lot of fast-food, and packaged, processed chemical-filled foods, and then hope the health care system has our backs when we get sick.

Or we can choose to be thoughtful about how we nourish and care for ourselves, and prevent most of the illness and disease that are so prevalent today. The choice really is up to us.
